LEADERSHIP

FOR A CHANGE

THE PLAN

1. Technology- "The New Economy"

Business Development is key to the economy of the First District, and technology based business is the future. Technology has powered growth to record highs in recent years, and to be competitive, the First District must strategically place itself in line to compete.

Rex has been involved in the development of accessible technologies in the area. Furthermore, he understands the needs of industry from personal working relationships established while serving on the Industrial Development Authorities of Lee County, Scott County, Duffield, and the Gate City Economic Development & Revitalization Committee. It was through his work in Gate City that Rex was able to develop the model for the Gate City Technology Zone.

Rex has the experience to work with the Economic Directors of each county in their recruitment of technology based business.

2. Education Reform

The First District is blessed to have wonderful, competent, and caring teachers. However, we can do better for our students. With the rise in the demand for service industry careers, career tracks should once again become a part of education and career planning, allowing students who are not college bound the opportunity to explore career options. Vocational Education reform should be included in these plans.

Rex once worked as a teacher and understand the needs of education. Rex will work to make sure that our children have the best career options. Our future as a region is only as bright as theirs, therefore their success is imperative to the First District.

3. Natural & Heritage Tourism

We live in one of the most beautiful areas of the world, and our natural tourism brings thousands of tourists through the First District. That is why Rex supports more funding for state parks and recreation areas. Without continued preservation and maintenance, the availability of these areas will diminish. Without an economic strategy, these areas will never fufill their greatest potential as a region.

Rex has a passion for our heritage and history as a region that has been reflected through The Homeplace Mountain Farm and Museum. Because he founded this establishment which has drawn thousands of school children and tourists, Rex has a personal knowledge of the benefits these venues possess. Rex also worked to preserve history by aiding the Carter family move and restore A.P. Carter's mountain family home to the museum grounds of the Carter Fold.

With the establishment of The Crooked Road Heritage Music Trail, Rex has the know-how to help others celebrate their heritage through the establishment and success of similar businesses.

4. Election Reform

Al Capone once said, "Vote early, and vote often." While many will laugh, unfortunately we have seen recent elections that were illegitimate. It is time for Virginia to take a serious look at Election Reform.

At the very least, certification should be required for all County Voter Registrars who are expected to fully understand election law and to enforce it. Furthermore, absentee ballot guidelines need to be reviewed, with a possible substitution of early voting in most cases of absentee ballot applications.

Rex will work toward establishing fair voting procedures that will ensure that elections are valid and legitimate.

We would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who "Joined the Team!"

Congratulations to Tim Kaine on his victory.
